Captains Highs and Lows!
|
Robert M cGowan:
The 1st
team had a slow start, but this
was followed by 5 successive wins anda final position of third - a
most satisfactory outcome. Regulars were, Matt Fairbairn, Steven
Mortimer, the Hales brothers and Jonathan Elder, supplemented by
appearances from Josh, Peter and Paul from Godwin's coaching staff. We
look forward to doing better still in 2009. In contrast, the 2nd team
was often under-strength and found itself a little out of its depth
and will hope to do better next year in Division 2. Many thanks to
Mike Ballard, Steven Cox, and all the others members who helped ensure
we always fielded a team. The two pair teams also had very mixed
fortunes. Sekhar kindly took on the running of the 2nd
team which was intended to give
matches to the younger members who would not otherwise get match
practice. Once again we managed to fulfil our fixtures, but found the
standard just a little too high. |
|
Jonathan Hales:
The season has been the most disrupted
season for a very long time and seemed to impact the mixed team more
than most. Rain, bad light and teams withdrawing due to lack of
players meant that, what started off as a planned short season was
extended well into September and after starting with a league of 7
teams, we ended up with only 5 and played only 4 matches. So slightly
disappointing results, but all players who took part enjoyed the
opportunity to play mixed tennis in the summer. |
|
Susan Glenn (Ladies Captain):
The first and second team have done very
well to remain in their divisions, while the third team was probably
too stretched to remain in the second division this year. The two pair
teams were an unknown quantity, so the first team has done well to
remain in their division, and the second team has been targeted
towards giving all the other players an opportunity to play in a
match,so the results aren’t so important. |
Ann Love: The
first ladies team this season has done very well to remain in its
division given the injuries that we have had with players. After a
difficult start in the first three matches the players really pulled
together and played very well to win the last three. The number of
games won was very close to those of the winning team, but sadly not
the number of sets! |
|
Ros Hole:
The 2nd
team results mean that we will be
staying in Division 2 next season. This was a fantastic result as we
needed to ‘borrow’ players from other teams for every match due to
injuries and a small pool of players. Well done to everyone who
contributed to the 2nd
team’s success. |
Jill Walters:
Thank-you to all the players who
participated the ladies third team. We fought valiantly, but
unfortunately had several very narrow defeats and only one win. Sadly,
we will go down a division but hopefully our demotion will be
short-lived and we will bounce back again next year! |
|
Fiona Brown: This was the
first year that the Bucks Shield has included a 2-pair team format,
and for a club our size, I think we did really well to field so many
ladies teams this year. As rules stated that players were only allowed
to play in a total of two 2-pair matches if they were also playing in
the 3-pair teams, this meant that a total of 17 ladies played in our
1st 2-pair team this year. With our results, we should stay to fight
another year in division 1. Many thanks to everyone who played! |
Lucy Arnold: There was a
good response from ladies wishing to play this 2-pair, 4 set format.
Regular players included Lucy Arnold, Maria Brothers, Pat Edwards,
Janice Godden and Sarah Wilding backed up by Jackie Martin, June
McAdam, Anita Briden, Sheila McKenna, Llanos Martinez and Roselle
Beard. Despite the bad weather we managed to get all our matches
played on time, and we had one stunning win at Wendover which was 4-0
whitewash! |
